University Sertoma and the CI Club held this year’s Leadership Conference on July 23, 2013, at the HyVee located at 84th and Holdrege. The conference was attended by 33 members from the 2 clubs. Goals, fundraising and other events for the new year, along with the president’s goals were discussed. Committees had a chance to meet to plan for the new year and the new website was demonstrated. For additional information regarding the event, contact Deb Drewel at email@example.com.
Members of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity nationwide started their journey from San Francisco weeks ago to raise funds and awareness to benefit people with disabilities and organizations dedicated to their service. On July 9, these college students rode 100 miles to reach Lincoln where they spent the night, enjoyed a picnic dinner provided by our club, and had a rocking good time at a dance sponsored by the ARC of Lincoln for the PUSH participants and the ARC clients. PUSH America has raised over $15 million to date for this cause. This has been one University Sertoma’s annual sponsorships for many, many years and is an example of our club’s “Service to Mankind.”
Each year University Sertoma selects an outstanding club member as “Sertoman of the Year” who has not only displayed tremendous support to our club but also is an active volunteer in our community. This year’s recipient, Fran Follett, has been known for her enthusiasm and involvement in Sertoma for the past 24 years in many roles including president. Fran joined our club a couple of years ago, immediately volunteered to organize our weekly newsletter, and is also our club secretary for the 2013-2014 year. Her community involvement includes her active participation as a volunteer advocate for the past 12 years with the Lancaster County Court Appointed Special Advocates program whose focus is to insure that the child welfare system is responsive to children’s needs making sure that children do not “languish” in the system but reach permanency (a safe, permanent home) as quickly as possible. Congratulations to Fran who is pictured here with her nominator, Nola Pollmann.
