University Sertoma Club Nominee Receives Award at the Sertoma Great Plains Regional Convention

Mike Smith - Skate for ChangeRecently, members of our club attended the Sertoma Great Plains Regional Convention, encompassing clubs in the districts of North and South Dakota, Greater and East Nebraska, North and South Minnesota, and Iowa, August 22-24, 2013, in Rochester, MN.

Mike Smith, our club’s nomination for the Service to Mankind award at the district and regional level, was selected as the winner.  His nomination will now be sent for consideration of the national Service to Mankind Award to be presented at the national convention in April of 2014.  He is the founder of a Lincoln-based organization called “Skate for Change” made up of skateboarding youth who are committed to giving back to the low-income and homeless in our community.

Mike was not able to attend the convention to accept his award but sent the following message.  “I’d like to accept this award on behalf of all the thousands of kids that have participated in Skate for Change across the country and the lives that have been affected by a simple concept that we put into action each week.  Our success is due to the contributions of many to whom I’ll be forever grateful.  We are beyond humbled to be granted this award and we will continue doing our part to help change the world, one push at a time.”
